Introduction:
In remote Communities in Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia, HEPTO is creating a Women’s Health, Maternity, and Baby’s Centre to provide care and empowerment. This initiative aims to address the challenges faced by women and girls in underserved regions.
Problem Statement:
In Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia, women face significant challenges in accessing personalized and comprehensive healthcare. The current healthcare approach often overlooks their individual needs, making it difficult for them to receive tailored health recommendations. These women encounter geographic, time, and financial constraints when accessing healthcare professionals.
Additionally, the absence of safe and inclusive platforms for open health discussions deprives them of crucial peer and professional support. Education and empowerment gaps further worsen the situation, hindering their ability to make informed decisions about their health.
Many girls in these regions cannot afford sanitary pads, leading to interruptions in their education. Women lack essential skills and knowledge, facing difficulties in supporting their families economically. Limited access to prenatal and postnatal care also puts mothers’ and newborns’ lives at risk.
Empowering women and youth is crucial for economic development and prosperity in any region. Academic research and real-world examples both demonstrate this. Much of the progress seen in Western economies is a direct result of women being able to control their reproduction rights.
A significant number of women in Africa give birth at a young age, posing health risks to both mother and child. Early marriage also creates a financial burden for families as they have to care for many children.
Many young girls who are fortunate enough to attend primary education drop out when they reach puberty due to a lack of sanitary pads and hygiene supplies for their menstruation cycle. This seemingly simple problem contributes to a disproportionate number of boys compared to girls in education.
What HEPTO envisions:
HEPTO’s Women’s Health and Empowerment Program envisions a compassionate approach to addressing pressing issues by establishing centers that provide both treatment and training. These centers serve a dual purpose, focusing on women’s health and skill development. By creating reusable sanitary pads, baby diapers, baby carriers, maternity apparel, blankets, quilts, and other essential items, women gain skills that not only improve their livelihoods but also benefit their communities.
This vision extends beyond maternal care, as these centers also offer healing for chronic diseases, infections, and emotional traumas in the community. The Women’s Health Centers are designed to address not just physical ailments but also nurture the spirit.
In line with this vision, HEPTO’s women and youth empowerment program will introduce handcraft tailoring programs for reusable sanitary pads and diapers. HEPTO aims to provide sewing machines, fabrics, and other materials, along with training, to women to create these products.
To ensure the long-term success of our healthcare program, we must recognize the importance of women and youth empowerment. We will employ and encourage women to participate in our healthcare worker programs, allowing them to play a leading role in our campaigns. This strategy will provide women with more financial power and options, while also making it easier for them to reach out to other women to raise awareness about childbirth, infant care, and postpartum care.
Our youth empowerment efforts will focus on providing education, training, and mentorship to young men and women. This will help us build sustainable healthcare services as young people will eventually take over the country’s leadership. Together, we can create a brighter, healthier future for all.
HEPTO’s Centers’ Transformative Impact:
Mamas Care: HEPTO provides access to prenatal and postnatal care, reducing maternal and infant mortality rates and improving health outcomes.
Mamas Learn: The mission includes training local traditional midwives and empowering them to care for mothers and babies. This knowledge transfer ensures a brighter and healthier future for communities. Reusable sanitary pads empower girls to continue their education, breaking the cycle of poverty.
Mamas Thrive: HEPTO believes in holistic empowerment, offering a place of learning at the Women’s Health, Maternity, and Baby’s Clinic. This space fosters awareness, unity, and the courage to break free from domestic violence. Each center can handle up to 30 deliveries daily and welcomes over 150 visitors, providing medical care and nourishment for the soul. Training and treatments empower women, enabling them to contribute to their families and local economies while fulfilling critical community needs and promoting self-reliance and resilience in underprivileged areas.
